CONGRESSMAN MORELLE SOUNDS THE ALARM ON BUDGET BILL’S IMPACT ON LOCAL SENIORS

Outlined threats to critical programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid
(Rochester, N.Y.)—Today, Congressman Morelle joined community leaders and local seniors at Episcopal Senior Life Community’s Valley Manor to address growing threats to programs older Americans rely on, like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
“Right now, as a direct result of President Trump’s budget bill, older Americans face a terrifying storm of threats to their healthcare, financial security, and dignity in retirement,” said Congressman Morelle. “I refuse to stand by while our seniors—who have spent a lifetime building our communities—have the rug pulled out from under them.”
Congressman Morelle spoke directly with seniors about how the federal budget jeopardizes their healthcare, financial security, and long-term care options.
The bill:
- Enacts the largest Medicaid cut in our nation’s history, slashing $900 billion from the program over the next ten years;
- Strips an estimated 15 million Americans of their health coverage, according to the Congressional Budget Office, and raises premiums for millions more;
- Threatens the closure of more than 500 nursing homes;
- Risks a 24% cut to Social Security benefits by 2032;
- Slashes food assistance for nearly 3 million Americans, including 900,000 seniors

Congressman Morelle is fighting to protect American seniors by supporting the following legislation:
- The Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act of 2025—to prohibit policies in reconciliation that would result in benefit cuts of coverage or enrollment loss in Medicaid and SNAP.
- The Social Security 2100 Act—to counter existing threats and harmful changes to the Social Security program.
- The Keeping our Field Offices Open Act—to impose a moratorium on office closures to ensure continued access to Social Security services for beneficiaries.
