CONGRESSMAN MORELLE INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO PROVIDE TAX DEDUCTION FOR EMPLOYEES WORKING FROM HOME DURING PANDEMIC

May 7, 2021

Home Office Tax Deduction supports workers who incurred expenses while transitioning to work-from-home setups

(Rochester, NY) – Today, Congressman Joe Morelle introduced legislation to establish a Home Office tax deduction to provide financial relief for the many employees who transitioned to working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Over the past year, millions of Americans began working remotely as an important step to combat the COVID-19 public health crisis—however, in doing so, they often incurred significant expenses during an already financially trying time," said Rep. Joe Morelle. "I'm proud to introduce this important legislation to provide relief for workers like the countless teachers, social service professionals, and other employees who kept our country running during this pandemic. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to swiftly pass this legislation and ease the financial burden the pandemic has placed on hardworking families."

Due to COVID-19 and the necessary shift to work from home, many Americans have paid out of pocket for home office expenses to make their remote office workable. This legislation will create a temporary above-the-line deduction for business expenses incurred by an employee between March 13, 2020—December 31, 2021. Targeted to assist middle-class workers, the benefit will start to phase out for high wage earners. There is no minimum threshold to be eligible for this deduction.
