CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE DOUBLES DOWN ON PUSH FOR GUN REFORM

Reiterates call to get illegal weapons off our streets, enact universal background checks, ban assault weapons, and take concrete steps to reduce violence

(Rochester, NY) – Today, Congressman Joe Morelle continued his call for action to address the scourge of gun violence in Rochester. Congressman Morelle was joined by community partners who reiterated their commitment to finding solutions and shared their frustration by the lack of political will to address this critical issue.

“Like so many across our community and nation, I have grown increasingly frustrated by the lack of concrete action on guns,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “I have pleaded with my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, who are quick to shine a spotlight on gun violence and assign blame, and yet refuse to offer any solutions. You cannot have a serious conversation about stopping violence in this community without being willing to address the root causes, one of which is the proliferation of guns on our streets.”

  1. HR 1808 Assault Weapons Ban
    Bans the sale, transfer, manufacture, and importation of military-style assault weapons.

     
  2. HR 8 Bipartisan Background Checks Act
    Mandates background checks on the sale or transfer of every gun.

     
  3. HR 2510 Keep Americans Safe Act
    Bans the sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines and limits magazines to no more than ten rounds.

     
  4. HR 1004 Firearm Risk Protection Act
    Requires liability insurance for all firearm owners and purchasers.

     
  5. HR 1752 Cool Off Act
    Would mandate a three-day waiting period before an individual may receive a purchased handgun.

     
  6. HR 7910 Protecting Our Kids Act
    Raises the age to 21 to buy a semi-automatic rifle, bans high-capacity magazines, bans bump stocks, imposes safe firearm storage requirements and encourages use of best practices for safe storage, codifies an ATF rulemaking to better regulate ghost guns, and strengthens penalties for gun trafficking.

    Authorizes funding for research on firearms safety and gun violence prevention.

    To allow for the injury or death of a minor resulting from unsafe storage of a firearm to be made a crime and punishable with prison time.

    Closes the “Charleston Loophole” and affords the FBI adequate time to conduct thorough background checks.

    Allows family and friends to request law enforcement the confiscate firearms from certain individuals deemed unsafe.

Removes existing immunity from liability for gun manufacturers, distributors, and dealers.
 

  1. HR 3088 Untraceable Firearms Act
    Amends the existing definition of “firearm” under federal law to include gun kits and partial receivers, ensuring that ghost guns don’t escape federal firearm regulations.

    To encourage states to enact extreme risk laws to support law enforcement and protect families.

    To direct Consumer Product Safety Commission to establish firearm storage safety standards.

    Would prevent the sale of firearms to individuals convicted of a hate crime.

    Authorizes funding to invest in effective community-based violence intervention programs and provide jobs to opportunity youth between the ages of 16-24.

    To establish an interagency advisory council that would gather and distribute resources for victims of gun violence.

To establish basic business practices and certification requirements for gun shop owners and employees.

Modernizes the business of selling firearms, including provisions from the Gun Theft Prevention Act.

  1. HR 6717 Preventing Pretrial Gun Purchases Act

Ensures that the background check system used for firearms purchasers denies a firearm to a person prohibited from possessing guns by a lawful court order governing the pretrial release of the person.
