CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE TAKES ACTION TO PROVIDE TAX RELIEF FOR HARDWORKING FAMILIES
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Congressman Joe Morelle voted in support of bipartisan legislation to eliminate the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap and restore tax fairness for middle-class families.
“The tax reforms enacted by the Trump Administration in 2017 were an assault on the middle class – and especially on middle class New Yorkers. And the cap on state and local tax deductions only added insult to injury,” said Rep. Morelle. “That’s why I am so proud to have co-sponsored and voted in support of critical legislation to eliminate the SALT cap and provide much-needed relief for hardworking families.”
The Restoring Tax Fairness for States and Localities Act seeks to remedy the burden placed on middle-class families by the enacting a cap on SALT deductions as part of the Trump Administration’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This legislation would eliminate the marriage penalty by doubling the cap to $20,000 for joint filers for 2019 and would fully restore the SALT deduction for 2020 and 2021. In addition, the legislation would increase beneficial deductions to off-set out-of-pocket expenses for teachers and professional first responders.
The cost of this plan would be fully offset by returning the top individual tax rate from 37 percent, back to 39.6 percent, as it was prior to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.
The bill has passed the House of Representatives and will be sent to the Senate for consideration.
