CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE ANNOUNCES FEDERAL FUNDING FOR ROCHESTER’S CENTER FOR YOUTH SERVICES

October 11, 2024

$230,000 in federal funding will support the Center for Youth Services’ Chrysalis House, the country’s only transitional housing program for homeless teen mothers

(Rochester, N.Y.)—Today, Congressman Joe Morelle announced $230,000 in federal funding from the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to support the Center for Youth Services’ transitional housing initiative for teen mothers, the only of its kind in the United States.

“Ensuring every family—regardless of zip code, income, or other circumstances—has access to the resources they need to thrive is one of my top priorities. And with this funding, we’re one step closer to making this goal a reality,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “The Center for Youth Services’ Chrysalis House is ensuring young women who may be pregnant or have young children will never be left to wonder if they’ll have a roof over their head or food on their table, and I’m proud to support their important work. I look forward to continuing our efforts to uplift every family in Rochester and give everyone the chance to thrive.”

Valerie Douglas, Director of Counseling & Runaway and Homeless Youth Services at the Center for Youth Services, said: “We are honored to walk alongside young mothers in Monroe County who face staggering obstacles in completing their education and finding living-wage jobs while facing a 200% higher risk of homelessness than their non-parenting peers. This funding is crucial in laying the foundational support for their success. These young women are eager to improve their lives and the lives of their children. Having a safe and stable place to live is just the start but an essential one. We are grateful for this HHS FYSB award and Congressman Morelle's advocacy for all families.”

The Center for Youth Services’ Chrysalis House is considered a Maternity Group Home Program (MGH), providing a living environment for young women who may be pregnant or have children for up to 18 months. Currently, it is the only transitional housing program for homeless teen mothers in the county with the capacity to serve six mothers with two additional beds for young women who are pregnant or who do not have children.

The residents of Chrysalis House are actively involved in seeking educational programs and vocational and employment opportunities, and the home serves as a place where young mothers can make transformational decisions that positively impact themselves and their children under the guidance and support of a dedicated and nurturing staff.
