(Washington, D.C.) — Today, Congressman Joe Morelle announced Jagdianis Del Carmen Cuello Alvarez as the winner of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition for New York’s 25th Congressional District. Ms. Alvarez is a Senior at School of the Arts in Rochester.

“We’re incredibly lucky to have a community full of so many talented artists and innovators,” said Rep. Morelle. “Ms. Alvarez’s artwork is bold, thought-provoking, and demonstrates extraordinary skill. I congratulate her on this outstanding accomplishment and look forward to having her artwork proudly represent Monroe County in the United States Capitol.”

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for one of our talented scholars,” said Rochester City School District Superintendent Dr. Lesli Myers-Small. “Jagdianis’ notable efforts in photography classes and photo club are apparent in her work.  We are honored that Congressman Morelle has recognized the efforts of a hard-working student.”

Ms. Alvarez’s digital photography artwork is entitled “Viridescent” and depicts a still life of vegetables. It was selected as the winner by a panel of judges from the Memorial Art Gallery who gave the piece a score of 55 out of a possible perfect score of 60. As the winning submission, “Viridescent” will be displayed at the United States Capitol for one year alongside the works of other participating districts from across the country. It will also be featured on the official Congressional Art Competition website.

Since its founding in 1982, over 650,000 students have participated in the Congressional Art Competition. Later this month, Ms. Alvarez will fly to Washington, DC to be recognized for her outstanding work by the Congressional Institute.
