CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE ANNOUNCES NEW FEDERAL DOLLARS TO SUPPORT INNOVATION IN ROCHESTER

November 17, 2023

NextCorps set to receive new funding through a U.S. Department of Energy program

(Rochester, N.Y.) — Today, Congressman Joe Morelle announced NextCorps was selected to receive funding in a United States Department of Energy (DOE) contest to spur clean energy manufacturing across the United States.

“We all know Rochester has a long and storied history of innovation—and I’m proud to announce this new funding for NextCorps as the next step in our community’s innovation story,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “Building on our recent designation as a Regional Technology Hub, this funding will allow NextCorps to continue their work to secure our clean energy future, all while fostering entrepreneurial growth and creating good-paying jobs in the process. Congratulations to NextCorps on this announcement, and I cannot wait to see all the amazing results from this exciting collaboration!”

“NextCorps is excited to combine the experience we’ve gain from years of working with small and mid-sized manufacturers, as well as from our multiple clean energy programs, to create new growth opportunities here in the region,” said Jim Senall, NextCorps President. “This award will help us to further develop a regional strategy and partnerships around clean energy manufacturing, which will be used to secure additional rounds of funding for project implementation.”

The NextCorps Rochester Area Clean Energy Manufacturing Hub was named a Phase One winner of the DOE’s inaugural Manufacture of Advanced Key Energy Infrastructure Technologies (MAKE IT) Prize Strategies Track.

The MAKE IT Prize is a multiphase, two-track competition aimed at catalyzing domestic manufacturing of critical components for the clean energy infrastructure. Following the announcement of this award in the “Strategies Track,” the 13 teams—including NextCorps—will go on to submit a plan to establish a manufacturing facility for their identified clean energy technology.  Additional funding of $100,000 will be available in the Phase 2, “Create” phase of the competition, followed by the opportunity to win $250,000 in the Phase 3, “Activate” portion, which will lead to a letter of commitment from at least one entity ready to establish a facility in the region.

The MAKE IT Prize was developed by the DOE Office of Technology Transitions (OTT), the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED), and the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). For more information, visit the MAKE IT Prize’s website here.
