CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE ANNOUNCES OVER $1 MILLION FOR LOCAL EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMMING IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES
(Rochester, NY) - Today, Congressman Joe Morelle announced the delivery of over $1 million in emergency grant funding for Head Start early childhood services at Action for a Better Community (ABC). The funding is made available by the Department of Health and Human Services and was allocated through the American Rescue Plan, which Rep. Morelle helped pass.
“I’m proud to have helped deliver these funds for vital early childhood programs that help our kids grow and thrive,” said Rep. Morelle. “This investment is critical to helping ABC continue their work to support families, especially those in underserved communities. I’m grateful for their continued partnership as we work to ensure every child has the essential support and resources they need.”
Action for a Better Community (ABC) was awarded $1,331,705 in supplemental emergency grant funding for Head Start programming. ABC provides educational and developmental services to over 1,000 children and pregnant women right here in Monroe County.
“These funds come at a time of increased need for Head Start families, and increased operational needs for the program,” said Jerome Underwood, President and CEO of Action for a Better Community. “With this investment we will be able to improve outdoor play spaces, modify indoor space to accommodate social distancing, expand family and staff wellness efforts, as well as enhance our recruitment efforts for children and staff. There are still too many children in New York State that do not have access to high quality early childhood education. Making this investment is a welcomed acknowledgement of that fact. We are grateful for Congressman Morelle’s efforts in these funds, not only for Rochester, but New York State as a whole.”
Head Start and Early Head Start programs offer education, health, and nutrition services to children from at-risk backgrounds—those living in poverty, in foster care, or experiencing homelessness—as well as employment and educational support to their parents. Through the American Rescue Plan, Congressman Morelle helped secure over $59 million in Head Start funding for New York.
