CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE CALLS ON DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE TO ENSURE SCHOOLS, STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO NECESSARY TECHNOLOGY FOR DISTANCE LEARNING

August 21, 2020

Urges action to remedy delays that are preventing schools from obtaining technology like Chromebooks ahead of new school year

(Rochester, NY) – Today, Congressman Joe Morelle called on the United States Department of Commerce to address the significant delays in obtaining technology like Chromebooks and Tablets that are preventing school districts from adequately preparing for remote and distance learning. This comes after reporting by WHEC that several school districts in Monroe County will not receive their devices in time for the new school year, despite their orders being placed as much as 5 months ago.

"I am concerned that this will have adverse consequences on American school children and educators preparing to confront the unique challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic," writes Rep. Morelle in the letter. "The transition to hybrid and distance learning will be difficult enough for students and educators alike without the added strain caused by a lack of adequate equipment. We must ensure our schools have every tool available to create a successful learning environment during this unprecedented time."

Rep. Morelle is requesting a response from the Department of Commerce by September 1 to explain what actions they are taking to remedy the situation and ensure schools across America can retain access to distance learning technology. The full letter to U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Ross is below.
