CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE CELEBRATES NATIONAL DAY OF LIGHT

Introduces bipartisan resolution reaffirming America’s commitment to scientific discovery and investment in optics and photonics research
(Rochester, N.Y.)—Today, Congressman Joe Morelle (D, NY-25), Founder and Co-Chair of the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Optics and Photonics Caucus, announced he introduced a resolution officially marking May 16 as National Day of Light in the United States.
“Light-based technologies are transforming the way we live, from lifesaving medical advancements and cutting-edge manufacturing to communications, energy, and national security,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “At a time when global competition in science and technology is accelerating, America must continue investing in research, innovation, and the workforce that will drive the next generation of discovery. National Day of Light is an opportunity to celebrate the scientists, engineers, educators, and innovators whose work strengthens our economy and improves lives every single day.”
International Day of Light is celebrated annually on May 16 and recognizes the critical role light plays in science, education, medicine, communications, energy, and culture. Congressman Morelle’s resolution continues the effort to formally recognize a National Day of Light in the United States and reaffirm the importance of sustained investment in optics and photonics research.
This year also marks the 65th anniversary of the first successful laser demonstration by physicist Theodore Maiman in 1960, a breakthrough widely regarded as one of the most transformative scientific achievements of the modern era. Since that discovery, laser and photonics technologies have revolutionized industries ranging from medicine and telecommunications to manufacturing and space exploration.
Congressman Morelle has long been a national leader in advancing science and technology policy. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Optics and Photonics Caucus and Vice Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, he has consistently advocated for robust federal investments in scientific research, STEM education, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies. Last year, Morelle was also recognized as a “Champion of Science” by The Science Coalition for his leadership supporting federal research and innovation initiatives.
The resolution is co-led by fellow Congressional Optics and Photonics Caucus Co-chair Congressman Brian Mast (R, FL-21). Read the full text of the resolution here.
