CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE CONDEMNS REPUBLICAN EFFORTS TO CUT FUNDING FOR PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT AND PROTECT WOMEN

As a member of House Appropriations Committee, Morelle fights back against Republican efforts to cut funding for Violence Against Women Act, reproductive health services, and more
Today, Congressman Joe Morelle slammed House Republicans on their proposals to make drastic cuts to critical women’s services in the fiscal year 2025 appropriations bills—including gross reductions in funding for contraception coverage, reproductive healthcare, and Violence Against Women Act grants that support survivors of domestic abuse. Congressman Morelle is a member of the House Appropriations Committee tasked with crafting these annual funding bills.
“Funding bills are statements of priorities, and House Republicans have made theirs clear: they intend to double down on their assault on women,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “Their proposals contain draconian cuts to programs and services like Title X Family planning, Planned Parenthood health centers, Violence Against Women Act grants, and more. These are blatant attacks against women’s rights and freedoms, and I plan to use my role on the House Appropriations committee to fight back.”
The proposals included in Republicans’ Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS) and Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS) funding bills would:
- Bar funding for the Reproductive Rights Task Force, litigation against States or local governments regarding abortion laws, and guidance to prevent harassment in the workplace;
- Cut Violence Against Women Act grants that help reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking by $46 Million from last year and $133 million below the President’s request;
- Prohibit funding for a rule that requires businesses to make reasonable accommodations for employees seeking abortion care;
- Eliminate funding for Title X Family planning and the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program;
- Block funding for Planned Parenthood health centers and access to abortion and reproductive health services;
- Cut programs that support maternal and child health, including eliminating Healthy Start; and more.
Each fiscal year, Congress is required to draft and enact 12 appropriations spending bills. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Morelle has the opportunity to help craft these important bills and advocate for the programs and services our community cares about. Congressman Morelle continues to build on his long-standing commitment to fighting for women’s rights by helping to ensure these appropriations bills protect funding for essential women’s services.
