CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE MARKS MARCH 3 AS NATIONAL TRIPLE NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS DAY
(Rochester, NY) – Today, Congressman Joe Morelle announced he has introduced a resolution designating today, March 3, as National Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) Awareness Day. By creating this designation, Morelle aims to foster greater public awareness and understanding of TNBC and encourage the early detection and prompt treatment of this disease.
“I’m humbled to author and introduce this resolution as a way to help raise awareness for a cause near and dear to me and my family,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “My daughter, Lauren, battled triple negative breast cancer for two years with incredible courage and tenacity. As we recognize TNBC Awareness Day, I extend my support to the thousands of women and men affected by this devastating disease, their families and loved ones, and highlight the need for continued education, research, and action to end cancer as we know it.”
Breast cancers are generally diagnosed based upon the presence, or lack thereof, of three “receptors” known to fuel most breast cancers: estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). The most successful treatments for breast cancer target these receptors; however, a diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer means that none of these receptors are present, causing the cancer to be immune to many common treatments.
Congressman Morelle has introduced this resolution every year in honor of Lauren and everyone whose life has been impacted by cancer. It is a part of his ongoing commitment to strengthening resources to fight cancer, including early detection and treatment.
