CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE NAMED CHAIRMAN OF HOUSE RULES SUBCOMMITTEE

Will Chair Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process
June 14, 2021 (Rochester, N.Y.) – Today, Congressman Morelle was named by Rules Committee Chairman James McGovern (D-MA) as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process. The appointment follows the passing of Rep. Alcee Hastings (FL-20), who served as Vice Chair of the Rules Committee and was Chairman of its Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process.
"I'm humbled and honored to take on this leadership position within the Rules Committee and I'm grateful to Chairman McGovern for the confidence he has placed in me," said Rep. Morelle. "I'm committed to carrying on the work of my dear friend and colleague, Rep. Hastings, who I was lucky to spend so much time with. I look forward to serving in this new capacity and working alongside my colleagues to advance policies that grow our economy, revitalize our communities, and support the needs of hard-working families."
"As we continue mourning the loss of our dear friend and colleague Alcee Hastings, we must also continue the work that he cared so deeply about. Rep. Morelle is a leader on the Budget Committee and his expertise will be invaluable as our subcommittee continues its work," said Chairman McGovern. "I congratulate him on this appointment and look forward to working with him in this new role as we shape legislation to help the American people."
Among the oldest standing committees in the House, the Rules Committee is responsible for determining when and how legislation will come before members on the House floor and assisting leadership in scheduling bills for floor action, including crafting specials rules that determine the terms and conditions of debate on bills. All legislation must first pass through the Rules Committee before it is brought to the floor for a vote. Rep. Morelle has been a member of the Rules Committee since 2019.
