CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE SPEAKS ON THE HORRIFIC EVENTS OF JANUARY 6, 2021

(Washington, D.C.)—Today, Congressman Joe Morelle marked the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by participating in a hearing featuring testimony from former law enforcement, state officials, and Americans who witnessed the insurrection.
“January 6, 2021, was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history, and it demands honesty—not political revisionism. Efforts to whitewash the attack dishonor the truth, the victims, and the brave officers who defended our democracy,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “Those who summoned the mob, including President Trump, bear responsibility—but so do those who stood by, excused the violence, or helped rewrite its history. Protecting the guilty while attacking the police who saved lives is cowardice, and it cannot be allowed to stand.”
Congressman Morelle was present in the Capitol Complex during the January 6 Insurrection and was forced to shelter in place while the violent mob infiltrated the citadel of our Republic. On January 7, 2021, Congressman Morelle called for the impeachment of then-President Donald Trump, citing the need for an investigation into “crimes of sedition and treason.”
In the five years since January 6, 2021, Congressman Morelle has remained an ardent support of efforts to honor the brave men and women who risked their lives defending the Capitol, and he has continually called out the hypocrisy of his Republican colleagues. As Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, Congressman Morelle has continually called on Speaker Johnson and House Republicans to display a plaque honoring the law enforcement who were present on January 6, 2021, which was required by law to be hung in the United States Capitol.
Congressman Morelle has also used his position as the Top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration to work in a bipartisan manner to secure additional security funding for Members of Congress, their families, and their staff.
