CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE STANDS UP FOR MEDICAID, FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

Morelle co-sponsors legislation to protect the essential programs and services people rely on to survive
(Washington, D.C.)—Today, Congressman Joe Morelle took action to protect Medicaid and food assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from the Trump administration’s chaotic and dangerous budget cuts.
“Instead of lowering costs for working families, the Trump administration and House Republicans have unveiled a plan to cut over $1 trillion from Medicaid and SNAP—pulling the rug out from under millions of Americans,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “This would have devastating consequences on seniors, children, and families who rely on these programs to receive basic healthcare and put food on the table. We must fight back against the Trump Administration’s repeated efforts to undermine the health and well-being of our community, which is why I’m proud to co-sponsor legislation to protect Medicaid and SNAP.”
The Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act would protect families by preventing Medicaid and SNAP from being cut during the Congressional budget process. In Rochester, the proposed Republican budget would put over 240,000 people—including 95,000 children and 26,000 seniors—at risk of losing Medicaid coverage. Medicaid, a joint federal and state program, currently provides health coverage to over 72 million Americans, including low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults, and people with disabilities. The proposed budget would also threaten the nearly 137,000 Rochesterians who count on food assistance programs like SNAP to help them make ends meet.
