CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE TAKES ACTION TO DELIVER AN ADDITIONAL $40 BILLION IN SUPPORT TO UKRAINE

May 10, 2022

(Washington, D.C.) — Today, Congressman Joe Morelle voted to pass the Additional Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2022, providing an additional $40 billion in military, economic, and humanitarian aid to the brave people of Ukraine.

“With this investment, we’re doubling down on our pledge to hold Putin accountable and support the courageous men and women of Ukraine,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “This legislation will allow the United States to provide the Ukrainian people with crucial military support and training, refugee and settlement support services, and resources to address the rapidly growing hunger crisis. I’m proud to deliver this much-needed assistance and will continue working alongside my colleagues to demonstrate our unyielding commitment to Ukraine during their time of need.”

This legislation builds on recent Congressional and White House action to provide the Ukrainian government with additional humanitarian aid and sends a clear signal that the United States remains resolute in its support of the Ukrainian people. President Biden initially requested an additional $33 Billion in aid, and this package will meet and surpass the Administration’s request.

Specifically, the Additional Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2022 will allocate:

  • $6 billion in direct military assistance and support to the national security forces of Ukraine through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative;
  • $8.766 billion for the Economic Support Fund to allow for the continuity of the Ukrainian government, counter human trafficking, and respond to global food insecurity;
  • $900 million in direct support for refugee services such as housing, English language classes, and other services for arrivals and refugees from Ukraine;
  • $4.35 billion to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for emergency food assistance to people around the world and other humanitarian needs;
  • $67 million for the U.S. Department of Justice to cover the costs of seizing, retaining, and selling forfeited property—such as the yachts of Russian oligarchs tied to Vladimir Putin—related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine;
  • Additional humanitarian and military support funding.

Congressman Morelle has remained committed to supporting and uplifting Ukraine throughout this crisis. He recently voted in favor of the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022—which President Biden then signed into law—to strengthen military support to the people of Ukraine. Rep. Morelle also recently passed the Asset Seizure for Ukraine Reconstruction Act of 2022 to liquidate the assets of Putin and Russian oligarchs and direct the funds to support the people of Ukraine.
