CONGRESSMAN MORELLE CALLS FOR SPECIAL SESSION OF CONGRESS TO ADDRESS GUN VIOLENCE

August 5, 2019

(Rochester, NY) --

"There are no words to adequately convey the anguish our nation feels following this weekend of horrific violence. Our hearts break for El Paso, for Dayton, and for every community, person, and family that has been touched by the never-ending string of gun violence that terrorizes our streets day after day.

"But we are not powerless over these tragedies. We can save thousands of innocent lives by passing universal background checks on all gun sales, banning military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines like those used in this weekend's attacks, and implementing red-flag laws. My colleagues and I in the House have already taken action on many of these measures – but inexplicably, the Senate has abdicated their role to protect the American people and failed to join us.

"I am encouraged by the President's desire to come together with Democrats to address the gun crisis in our country. That is why I urge the President to immediately convene a special session of Congress and demand both chambers come together to finally take legislative action to address gun violence. I can think of no better way to honor the victims of these shootings and their loved ones than to ensure no family has to endure the same horror.

"The time to act is now."
