CONGRESSMAN MORELLE SIGNS ON TO CO-SPONSOR H.R. 1

January 4, 2019

“For the People Act” delivers comprehensive anti-corruption and ethics reform measures

(Washington, DC) – Today, Congressman Joe Morelle signed on to co-sponsor House Resolution 1 (H.R. 1), the For the People Act. This legislation would implement sweeping anti-corruption measures to expand Americans' access to the ballot box, reduce the influence of big money in politics, and strengthen ethics rules across all three branches of government.

"Ensuring the integrity of our democracy and safeguarding the trust of the American people is one of the fundamental duties of our government, and that is why I'm proud to join my colleagues in the House in co-sponsoring H.R. 1," said Morelle. "This legislation makes important strides towards combatting the toxic influence of special interests in politics, demonstrates zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of power, and ensures the voice and vote of every person in this country is heard. Most importantly, it delivers on our promise to enact legislation that puts government back in the hands of hardworking Americans."

Specifically, the legislation will:

Improve Access to Voting – H.R. 1 creates automatic voter registration across the country; prohibits voter roll purges; expands early voting; simplifies absentee voting; and ends partisan redistricting.

Ensure Security – H.R. 1 increases oversight of election vendors and requires the development of a national strategy to protect U.S. democratic institutions.

Guarantee Disclosure – H.R. 1 requires all organizations involved in political activity to disclose their large donors, including strengthened oversight of Super PACs, and updating online political ad disclosure requirements.

Enhance Ethics Enforcement – H.R. 1 overhauls the Office of Government Ethics; closes loopholes for lobbyists and foreign agents; and ensures watchdogs have sufficient resources to enforce the law.
