CONGRESSMAN MORELLE TAKES ACTION OPPOSING HARMFUL CHEMCIALS PASSING THROUGH MONROE COUNTY

November 18, 2020

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration recently approved the transport of liquefied natural gas by train, risking serious harm to our community in the event of a derailment

(Rochester, NY) – Today, Congressman Morelle called on the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to address its recent decision to allow for liquefied natural gas (LNG) to travel by rail tank car through Monroe County.

"This highly flammable chemical, if spilled, not only risks the lives of thousands of residents but would create serious long-term challenges for small businesses, local governments, and the environment in our community," said Congressman Joe Morelle. "I strongly disapprove of the Administration's decision and urge this rule's immediate reversal."

The National Transportation Safety Board as well as the National Association of the State Fire Marshall has also spoken out in opposition of the PHMSA's decision.
