STATEMENT FROM CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF THE TAKE IT DOWN ACT

April 29, 2025

(Washington, D.C.)—Today, Congressman Joe Morelle, author of the bipartisan Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act, issued the below statement following House passage of the TAKE IT DOWN Act:

"Last night’s passage of the TAKE IT DOWN Act is an important step toward confronting the growing threat of non-consensual deepfake imagery, which overwhelmingly targets women and girls.

"While cases involving celebrities like Taylor Swift have drawn national attention, countless women and young girls face devastating emotional, financial, and reputational harm from deepfake exploitation every day.

"I was proud to lead a bipartisan effort supporting similar legislation, the Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act, which would establish both criminal and civil penalties for these heinous acts. I look forward to continuing to push for a comprehensive solution to this horrific problem, including allowing victims full access to justice in civil court, and ensuring all our nation’s laws stay up-to-date with technology."
