STATEMENT FROM CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE ON HYUNDAI’S RESPONSE TO RECENT VEHICLE THEFT IN ROCHESTER

“I’m grateful to Hyundai for their prompt response to my letter and heeding my calls to address this critical public safety crisis,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “The solutions they have outlined will help crack down on vehicle theft and better protect our families and businesses.I look forward to continuing to work closely with Hyundai to ensure their security measures are made available immediately and at zero cost to consumers.”

In their response, Hyundai outlined the following actions in response to Congressman Morelle’s February 4 letter:

• Launching a free-of-charge software upgrade to nearly 3.7 million vehicles starting on February 13 and completing by June 2023;
• Creating a program to reimburse vehicle owners and lessees for the cost of a steering wheel lock for vehicles unable to receive the software upgrade;
• Continuing to work with Rochester Police Department and Monroe County Sherriff’s Office to make steering wheel locks available when requested.
