STATEMENT FROM CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE ON VOTE AGAINST FEDERAL FUNDING FOR THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY

January 22, 2026

(Washington, D.C.)—Today, Congressman Joe Morelle released the following statement explaining his “NO” vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on funding for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which includes funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE):

“The immoral and cruel actions being ordered by President Trump and Secretary Noem and carried out by ICE agents are unacceptable. Across the country, people are being harassed in their neighborhoods with no regard for the Constitution or the rule of law. I cannot and will not vote to further enable this Administration’s campaign of fear and intimidation.

“When Democrats tried to impose basic oversight and limits on ICE, House Republicans rejected every single proposal, including requirements that ICE meet the same clear rules and standards followed by law enforcement agencies across the country. DHS needs real accountability, not a blank check.

“This bill is wrong and deeply disrespectful to the memory of Renee Nicole Good, her family, and everyone whose life has been upended by the chaos and of this administration’s immigration policies. I voted ‘NO,’ and I will continue to oppose efforts that give Donald Trump more power to abuse the system.”
